lenovo s930 MTK6582 phones to address the growing problem of handset theft

In emails obtained by CBS News, an industry executive who was involved in the negotiations, tells Samsung that: "They've received responses from all five major U.S. carriers and they've all denied our preload in their image..."Meaning, Miller reported, the major carriers refused to sell a smartphone with lenovo online store a free "kill switch" built-in.

Gascon suspects it's because it would cut into big profits the phone companies make selling anti-theft insurance and replacement phones."We're talking about a $60-billion-a-year industry, and about a half of that seems to be attached to the replacement of phones that are being stolen. So we're talking about a lot of money here."

The Wireless Association, which represents service providers, said they are working on alternatives to a "kill switch," and told CBS News: "CTIA and its member companies worked hard over the last year to help law enforcement with its stolen phone problem..." adding, "one of the components of the efforts was to create an integrated database designed to prevent stolen phones from being reactivated."

Miller added on "CBS This Morning," that Apple has been leading the way because Apple products were among the most stolen items in New York City. The industry-leading mobile phone maker has built into the IOS7 operating system a find-my-phone feature, a kill-my-phone feature, and a wipe-my-data feature, which means, if you steal a phone with the new operating system and you're the thief, you can't use it, you can't sell it, nobody you sell it to can use it. The hope is that as the bad guys figure that out, there's going to be no reason to steal the new Apple phones.

Now the issue is other phone systems."If Samsung was trying to use this feature and the carriers resisted, you have to say, 'Well, how can you get them to do what Apple did?'" Miller said. "With Apple they make they make the operating system, they make the phones. With Android, it's a bunch of different phone makers. It's a bunch of different companies, you'd really have to get to the level of Google who makes that operating system and have them build in the same kind of thing."

Miller said it's clear why kill switch alternatives are not as good because they put the onus on lenovo a516 smartphone phone owner."You have to get on the stolen phone registry, you have to go find your phone, you have to go do this -- with the Apple thing, you just say, through one device to another, 'you're a paperweight now,'" Miller said. "And look, in 1994, they broke into every car and stole every radio in New York. Until the car people and the radio people got together and they said, 'If you take the radio out of a car, it'll never work in another car,' this chip doesn't match that chip, they stopped stealing radios. Never happened again."

Nokia's Lumia 1520 is getting rave reviews. The device, which runs Microsoft's Windows Phone 8, is being called the best handset yet from Nokia's Lumia line. Still others are saying that the Lumia 1520 is the best Windows Phone smartphone ever launched. Grandiose praise aside, the Lumia 1520 is, on paper, a surprisingly impressive smartphone, complete with a 6-inch screen, a capable camera, and yes, a strong mobile operating system in Windows Phone.

The good reviews of the Lumia 1520 belie the litany of market analyst reports that contend that Nokia is dead in the water. Lately, though, Nokia's business has been turning around as its Windows Phone devices have been selling quite well, especially in Europe. That makes buying the company's products far less of a gamble than it was just a year ago. This eWEEK slide show takes a look at why the Lumia 1520 smartphone is winning reviewer praise and could prove to be a strong seller. Yes, believe it or not, there's a Windows Phone handset that can be favorably compared to the Android and iOS greats, and it comes from Nokia. Here are the reasons why.

Earlier this year, lawmakers in San Francisco and New York joined forces in an initiative called "Secure our Smartphones" that would encourage manufacturers to include a so-called "kill switch" in lenovo s930 MTK6582 phones to address the growing problem of handset theft. According to George Gascon, San Francisco's district attorney, carriers are determined to kill the kill switch initiative. The New York Times reports that Gascon was in talks with Samsung to pre-load software that would allow customers to deactivate stolen handsets, similar to iOS 7's Activation Lock. However, inclusion of the software would require approval from US carriers, and the likes of AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint weren't having it.
